Montreal Loves Dilla, a tribute to late Detroit hip hop producer James Dewitt Yancey (better known as Dilla, J. Dilla, and Jay Dee), will go ahead with its 15th edition, albeit online, with DJ Jazzy Jeff as a headliner.
As per event organizers, Montreal Loves Dilla “unites beatmakers, DJs and aficionados in a musical pilgrimage commemorating one of the most innovative musicians of our generation.”
This year’s edition of the Dilla love-in will include performances by DJ Jazzy Jeff, Skratch Bastid, Shash’U, Dr Mad, and more. Dilla’s mother, Ma Dukes will be this year’s guest of honour and will participate by way of a conversation.
Dilla became an icon of American hip hop in the 1990s and early 2000s with NPR hailing him as “one of the music industry’s most influential hip-hop artists.” He also contributed largely to the success of hip hop acts Slum Village, Jaylib, and Soulquarians.
Dilla passed away in 2006 at the age of 32 after battling thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and lupus.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, this year’s edition will consist of an online stream and donations will go to the J. Dilla Foundation.
Montreal Loves Dilla will be live streamed on Feb. 6 as of 1 p.m. at montreallovesdilla.com.
